Gangotri: In uttarakhand

 Gangotri is situated  in uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, is a part of the Char Dham Yatra, the sacred quartet of temples that includes Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.  It is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the temple is believed to be the site where King Bhagirath meditated to bring the Ganges to Earth. The Bhagirath Shila, a sacred stone near the temple, marks this spot .

'Gangotri', located in the lap of Himalayas at an altitude of 3140 meters, is a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus. By performing penance, offering tarpan and fasting at this pilgrimage, one attains the virtuous fruits of Yagya. The holy temple dedicated to Ganga on the right bank of Bhagirathi was built in the 18th century by Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa. It is believed that this temple was built on the rock on which King Bhagirath had performed penance. Today, a grand temple stands at the place of that ancient temple. It was constructed by the kings of Jaipur.The flow of the holy Ganga river turns towards the north.The name was Gangotri.
